Electrical Upgrades at Kate Gould Park

On Monday, October 7th a section of Kate Gould Park will be cordoned off for the public's safety while electrical upgrades are being installed in the area of the Whit Tileston Bandstand.

Please respect the caution tape and do not allow children or pets to venture into the restricted area. Access to the restrooms will be maintained. Thank you for your patience as this work is completed.

Fire Prevention Week is October 6th-12th

Fire Prevention Week is celebrated throughout North America every October and is the oldest U.S. public health observance on record. For more than 100 years, Fire Prevention Week has worked to educate people on the risk of home fires and ways to minimize them.

While home fire deaths have been cut in half since the early 1970’s when smoke alarms were first marketed, tragically, more than 3,000 people still die in fires each year in the US. Almost 60% of those deaths take place in homes without working smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms save lives.

Test your smoke alarms once a month. When you change your clocks on November 3^rd check the type of smoke alarm you have. If it is a sealed long-life unit with a non-replaceable batter, check the manufacturing date on the back and replace them when they are 10 years old. If your smoke alarm uses a regular battery, replace the battery.

Healthy Meals In Motion Mobile Pantry

As food insecurity has increased among seniors in our area, the Healthy Meals in Motion Mobile Pantry program has become a more important resource than ever before.

Started in 2016 with a partnership between the Chatham Council on Aging and the Family Pantry of Cape Cod, the program now also provides healthy foods to the senior citizens of Brewster, Dennis, Eastham, Orleans and Provincetown. Seniors registered in the program select their food from a provided list and receive a two-week supply of groceries once a month. This month’s grocery pick up is on Wednesday October 16^th at 12 noon at the Center for Active Living, 193 Stony Hill Road.

Transfer Station Redesign Project

Construction has begun on the Transfer Station Re-design project, Phase II, Priority 1, approved by 2023 Annual Town Meeting. A new fuel filling station for equipment has been installed toward the north side of the property. The existing garage on the west end of the property has been demolished and foundation excavation activities have begun.

While there is a construction fence separating active construction from traffic circulation, motorists should watch for moving construction vehicles and workers, and drive slowly through the area with caution.

Resident Vaccination Clinic October 9th

The VNA of Cape Cod, in collaboration with the Chatham Health Division, will hold a drive-thru vaccination clinic for Chatham residents on Wednesday, October 9th from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Public Works facility, 221 Crowell Road.

Vaccinations will be available for COVID-19 and influenza for those age 6 months+ and high dose influenza vaccinations will be available for those age 65+.

Early Coastal Duck Season

Coastal Duck season begins with a one week opening from October 12th through October 19th.

While this early opening is not as popular as the winter season from November 28th to January 28th, duck hunters may be present along our coastline from 1/2 hour before sunrise to sunset during that week. Caution signs are posted at beaches.

Center for Active Living Closed October 8th

The Center for Active Living, 193 Stony Hill Road, will be closed to the public on Tuesday, October 8th so that staff may participate in important health and safety trainings. The closure will not impact to Meals on Wheels deliveries that day.

Sewer Construction Update

October 6th thru 11th

Route 137/Morton Road Sewer Extension Project

Site work is expected to continue at Pump Station #3 (Meetinghouse Road) and Pump Station #4 (Twine Field Drive).

Stage Harbor Road Sewer Extension Project

Site work is expected to continue at the pumping station site (Old Mill Boat Yard/Harbormasters Garage).

CCTV of sewer work is expected on Stage Harbor Road. Police detail(s) will be on site and localized to the immediate area of work.

Oyster Pond Sewer Extension Project

Construction will continue at the Independence Lane Pump Station site and on Independence Lane. To avoid being inconvenienced during the daytime residents/visitors will be required to move vehicles off Independence Lane before 7:00AM. The Chatham Police Department will be on site daily to assist in locating alternate parking.

Water work is expected to start next week on Kelley Lane. The Chatham Police Department and Contractor will coordinate advance notifications to residents as access may be limited.

Queen Anne Pump Station Upgrade

No work is planned.

Mill Pond Pumping Station Upgrade

No work is planned.

"Better Together" Receives Donation

After hearing about Chatham Better Together, President and CEO of Broad Reach Healthcare, Bill Bogdanovich, felt that the mission of the program (bringing together older adults who experience isolation and loneliness) was closely aligned with the values of the Broad Reach organization, and decided to donate $5,000 to keep the program going into its second year.

This donation, along with two separate donations of $5,000 and $500 from anonymous donors, will allow Chatham Better Together participants to come together once per month for field trips and a delicious lunch from local community restaurants for the next year. “To say we are grateful is an understatement,” said Leah LaCross, Director of Community Services. “This program touched the lives of our participants in so many ways. To be able to continue it is such a gift.”

The donation was presented to Ms. LaCross and Suzanne Foster, Treasurer of the Friends of the Council on Aging, on Thursday night at Broad Reach Hospice’s 20^th Anniversary gathering at the Eastward Ho! Country Club.

Real Talk! At D-Y High School

Behavioral Health Innovators and the Quell Foundation will present a screening of "Lift the Mask: Portraits of Life with Mental Illness" followed by interviews and a Question & Answer session on mental and behavioral health for Cape Cod youth on Thursday, October 10th at 6:30 p.m. at Dennis-Yarmouth High School, 210 Station Avenue, South Yarmouth.

All who care for local youths are invited to attend this free event. The documentary is a powerfully intense film. Parental/guardian permission required for those under 18. Therapists will be available for confidential consultations immediately after the screening.

The Mainsheet

The name of our e-newsletter was selected from submissions by our community.
In nautical terms a mainsheet is the line connected to the boom which allows a sailor to control the speed of a boat. We think that is fitting for an e-newsletter that can be used to quickly send out important information to our community or at a more leisurely rate for less pressing matters. It reflects Chatham’s maritime history, is reminiscent of the front page of a newspaper, and it is a fun play on Main Street, where you go to be part of all that is happening in Town!
