Enjoy with Caution

Chatham's conservation areas are popular destinations for those who want to get away from the crowds of our busy summer season and enjoy a little solitude in nature.

Trail maps and parking instructions for our conservation areas are available online.

When visiting please take steps to protect yourself from tick bites and possible infection with tick-borne illnesses.

  • Check yourself for ticks when leaving a conservation area.
  • Use repellents with an EPA-registered active ingredient and always follow the product's application directions.
  • Weather permitting wear long-sleeved, light-colored shirts and long pants tucked into socks. This will help keep the ticks from reaching your skin and make them easier to spot.

Ticks only attach when you come in direct contact with them - they don't fly or jump! - so stay on marked paths to reduce your chances of contact.

The Mainsheet

The name of our e-newsletter was selected from submissions by our community.
In nautical terms a mainsheet is the line connected to the boom which allows a sailor to control the speed of a boat. We think that is fitting for an e-newsletter that can be used to quickly send out important information to our community or at a more leisurely rate for less pressing matters. It reflects Chatham’s maritime history, is reminiscent of the front page of a newspaper, and it is a fun play on Main Street, where you go to be part of all that is happening in Town!
