MA Dredging Grant Received

On Tuesday, July 26th the Town hosted a meeting of the Seaport Economic Council and MA Dredging Program grant award event at the Harbormaster's office on Stage Harbor Road.

Lt. Governor Karyn Polito announced $3.2 million in grants to six dredging projects. Chatham received $500,000 which will be used to dredge an estimated 30,000 cubic yards of sand from the Stage Harbor entrance channel. Dredging will preserve all-tide navigation in the harbor which is the Town's deep water port supporting commercial fish off-loading, hundreds of local and transient recreational boaters, and Coast Guard and Harbormaster search and rescue assets .

Sewer Construction Update

The next Phase (1D-2A) of sewer expansion as part of the Towns Comprehensive Wastewater Management Plan (CWMP) began recently with work on a new pump station on Town property at the intersection of Rt. 28 and Meetinghouse Rd. (Rt. 137).

Following the bidding process C.C. Construction was awarded the Contract for Phase 1D-2A . Phase 1D-2A will extend gravity sewers along portions of Morton Road, Meetinghouse Rd, and Mill Hill Rd. in addition to construction of several wastewater pump stations.

Work on the pump station began with clearing of the site to allow access and material storage on a site with topographic challenges. A site clearing subcontractor was scheduled on relatively short notice, so the clearing took place prior to notice being provided to the community. The location is ideal for siting a pump station as it is a natural low point in the area allowing the wastewater to flow by gravity. Once the pump station is completed it will pump the wastewater in a force main to be located under the bike path to the Water Pollution Control Facility (WPCF) for treatment.

Work on affected roads and the Old Colony Rail Trail will not begin until after Labor Day.

Dr. Florence Seldin Preschool Family Support

The Dr. Florence Seldin Preschool Support Program is intended to support families as they experience certain economic hardships that we recognize exist while living as a full-time Chatham resident. The high cost of housing, childcare, transportation, and other basic services increase challenges to our resident families.

The program supports essential learning opportunities for our youngest residents that will help better prepare them for improved learning experiences. Widespread statistics illustrate that children achieve better educational results when they have access to preschool programs that establish a strong foundational basis.

Chatham residents can choose any enrolled Preschool licensed provider, and once deemed eligible via confirmed residency, payment will be made by the Town directly to the service provider up to a maximum of $10,000 per year for each 4-year-old, and $5,000 per year for each 3-year-old – as of August 31st of the school year. This program is a direct feeder to Chatham Elementary School. Sustaining a viable Elementary School in Town is a priority for our community. Applications are now available. Information on the program and an application can be found on the Town’s website .

Level I Drought Declared

The Cape has entered Level 1 - Mild Drought status.
Please continue to adhere to the Town's Water Conservation Measures:

1. Irrigation System watering limited to Monday, Wednesday, & Friday between the hours of 3am -7am and 6pm -10pm.

2. Hand watering is allowed at any time with user discretion. Hand watering includes such tasks as watering flower & vegetable gardens, shrubbery; washing outdoor furniture; boat and vehicle washing. Users are asked to be considerate when hand watering, only do so when necessary, and use a hose with a nozzle that shuts off when not being squeezed by the person to avoid a running hose when it’s not attended.
3. Use by the Fire Department for training and equipment maintenance with discretion.

We remind users that established vegetation needs no more than 1” of water per week, either from precipitation or watering, or combination thereof. We also recommend that new plantings of shrubs, trees, or lawns be delayed if possible as these plantings require more water.

The Mainsheet

The name of our e-newsletter was selected from submissions by our community.
In nautical terms a mainsheet is the line connected to the boom which allows a sailor to control the speed of a boat. We think that is fitting for an e-newsletter that can be used to quickly send out important information to our community or at a more leisurely rate for less pressing matters. It reflects Chatham’s maritime history, is reminiscent of the front page of a newspaper, and it is a fun play on Main Street, where you go to be part of all that is happening in Town!
