Remembering Florence Seldin

Florence Seldin was my hero. I don’t know if I would be here as your Town Manager without her input, guidance and friendship. She represented the best in all of us; incredibly smart and extremely kind. She opened her heart and her home to myself and my husband, and helped Chatham become a home for us both. I will miss her every day. My heart goes out to Ira, her children and grandchildren. We were all so fortunate and better off for knowing her and having her as a part of our lives.

Earth Day - Celebrate Every Day

Small changes to personal habits add up to make big differences. The following are three easy ways you can lessen our community's impact on Mother Earth.

Water Bottle Filling Stations

After several delays three Water Bottle Filling stations approved by 2019 Annual Town Meeting have been installed at the Fish Pier, Oyster Pond, and the Community Center. Please take advantage of these stations to refill your reusable bottle and reduce the prevalence of single-use plastic water bottles.

Composting Bins Available

Be a part of our efforts to divert organic material such as yard debris (grass clippings, leaves, etc.) and kitchen scraps (fruit, vegetable spoils, coffee grounds, etc.) from the waste stream and start composting! You'll be rewarded by knowing you've removed hundreds of pounds of organic matter from your household waste per year and by having a steady supply of rich soil additive for a greener and healthier lawn and garden. The Transfer Station has a limited supply of compost bins available for $50.

Online Bill Pay

Yes, paying your bills online reduces your impact on the environment! By going paperless, you eliminate the manufacture and printing of bills and envelopes, the burning of fuels to ship those papers back and forth, and the need to dispose of them after the exchange is completed. You'll also save postage costs and in some cases the fees companies are beginning to charge for a paper bill.

Save the Date - "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" is Back!

After a two year break due to COVID-19, Chatham Municipal Airport will once again host its Annual Open House event "Plane, Trains, and Automobiles" on Saturday, June 11th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This free family friendly event features static aircraft displays, antique war birds, military aircraft, Nauset Model Railroad Club working display, antique fire truck rides, participants from several vehicle and car clubs, Marconi Maritime Center, Chatham Police and Fire Departments, US Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary, plus face painting and kids area, and food available for purchase!

Attracting Natural Predators

Andrew Davol of our Parks and Grounds Division recently built three owl houses at the request of the Park & Recreation Commission for installation on the municipal Fish Pier property.

Mr. Davol constructed the houses out of rough sawn pine and cedar or cherry cut from stump rounds that was on hand from park maintenance.

By attracting natural predators to the area, small rodent populations are controlled without the need for pesticide baits or traps.

RR Museum Seeking Volunteers

The Chatham Railroad Museum is seeking volunteers to serve on the Railroad Museum Working Group and as docents for this season.

No railroad experience is required, just enthusiasm for Chatham's history, meeting with Museum patrons, and railroading in general. New volunteer docents will be "trained" in the history of Chatham's railroad. Anyone who can volunteer a three hour shift,whether once a week or once a month is welcome! Watch this short video for more information.

The Mainsheet

The name of our e-newsletter was selected from submissions by our community.
In nautical terms a mainsheet is the line connected to the boom which allows a sailor to control the speed of a boat. We think that is fitting for an e-newsletter that can be used to quickly send out important information to our community or at a more leisurely rate for less pressing matters. It reflects Chatham’s maritime history, is reminiscent of the front page of a newspaper, and it is a fun play on Main Street, where you go to be part of all that is happening in Town!
