Remembering Juliet Bernstein

Chatham lost a true treasure with the passing of Juliet Bernstein on November 18th.

Juliet Relis was born in Ferndale, NY on July 12, 1913. She and her husband Selig Bernstein were educators in NY until retiring and moving to Chatham in 1971. She was an active member of our community ever since.

Ms. Bernstein served on the Health Care and Transportation Committees of the Cape Cod League of Women Voters and served as the League's President. She lead efforts that resulted in the Town being declared, by a non-binding advisory question, a nuclear free zone in 1984. She persuaded the Chatham Town Band to allow female musicians to join their ranks in the early 1980's. She served on the Town's Handicapped Affairs Committee from 1989-1992. She wrote countless letters to local newspapers on issues of women's rights,
social justice, and local interest; the last of which was published this week.

In February 2016 Ms. Bernstein was presented with Chatham's Boston Post Cane recognizing her as the Town's oldest resident at 102. The ceremony is available for viewing on the Town's website and will be re-broadcast on Ch. 18 this weekend to honor Ms. Bernstein.

The Mainsheet

The name of our e-newsletter was selected from submissions by our community.
In nautical terms a mainsheet is the line connected to the boom which allows a sailor to control the speed of a boat. We think that is fitting for an e-newsletter that can be used to quickly send out important information to our community or at a more leisurely rate for less pressing matters. It reflects Chatham’s maritime history, is reminiscent of the front page of a newspaper, and it is a fun play on Main Street, where you go to be part of all that is happening in Town!
