Dig It!

The Town has been awarded a $550,000 grant from the Massachusetts Dredging Program for the Stage Harbor Entrance Channel Dredging Project.

The Town will dredge an estimated 25,000 cubic yards of sand from the entrance channel. Dredging will preserve all-tide navigation in the Harbor, which operates as the southern hub of our community’s maritime economy and provides a secondary offloading location for the largest fishing fleet on Cape Cod and the third largest fleet in Massachusetts. Stage Harbor is home to three private marinas, over 50 commercial fishing vessels, and nearly 1,300 moorings and dockage slips.

The grant announcement was made by Housing and Economic Development Secretary Mike Kennedy yesterday in Wellfleet. Town Manager Jill Goldsmith and Ted Keon, Director of Coastal Resources, were on hand to accept the grant.

Also attending were Wellfleet Select Board Chair Ryan Curley, Senator Julian Cyr, Representative Sarah Peake's Chief of Staff Dottie Smith and local officials from other the beneficiary towns of Barnstable, Bourne, Dennis, Harwich, Mattapoisett, Newburyport, and Plymouth.

Join Our Team

The COA is prioritizing transportation to medical appointments as one of the next steps in the scaling up of services.  In order to meet this demand, we have immediate need of qualified bus drivers.  Do you know an experienced driver who might be interested?  Please encourage them to apply!

The Town of Chatham seeks a qualified individual to fill a part-time Bus Driver position for the COA. Join a tight-knit team that is passionate about serving our community of older adults and their caregivers. The ideal candidate will have a customer-service oriented approach and positive attitude. Utilizing COA buses and van, the driver provides door-to-door transportation for medical appointments, adult day programming, shopping and COA services. Hours are variable and will be 19 hours or less, 8am-4pm Mon-Fri; position is “intermittent employee” status. A valid Massachusetts driver’s license with an excellent driving record is required along with the ability to work independently and be flexible to adjust to the needs of the COA. The position will require a Department of Transportation physical along with CPR and AED certifications, which the COA will provide. Additionally, drivers are subject to drug and alcohol screening and training as required by Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority. While the position is not eligible for benefits, there are other rewards that come from working with these diverse and grateful clientele!

Funding Local Arts Programs

In Massachusetts public funding for the arts, humanities, and interpretive sciences are provided through the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Local Cultural Councils representing every city and town in the Commonwealth receive funds from the State Council for distribution to local grant applicants.

In FY2021 the Chatham Cultural Council granted full or partial funding to 21 out of 23 applicants. Field trips and enrichment programs for students at Chatham Elementary School and in the Monomoy Regional School District and programs for the senior community are regularly funded by the Council. In addition to the allotment from the State Council and funds appropriated by the Town, Cultural Council members conduct fundraising campaigns and events.

Unfortunately, fundraising efforts were halted by the pandemic and several Council members have decided to step down, so we are in a re-building year. If you are looking for an opportunity to volunteer in our community and have an interest in the arts, please consider applying to serve.

Swap Shop Update

The Swap Shop at the Transfer Station is scheduled to be open Friday through Monday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please be aware that daily operations are dependent on volunteer availability and it may not be open each day. If you are interested in volunteering at the Swap Shop please contact Human Resources/Benefits Coordinator Meagan Downey.
